“Asian kids are not pushed towards a career in the arts. That is both a stereotype and a correct blanket statement'
Closing out the cabaret stage at Manchester Pride last year was a moment that performer Jason Kwan says he will never forget.
“I became a performer as a way of taking back control of my identity,” Lucky, who will be hosting the takeover, says. “It was a Black trans woman who took a chance on me and booked me for my first gig eight years ago. Lip-syncher Indigo, who originally hails from Bangladesh but now lives in Widnes, says the house - which is only a year old - has allowed them to flourish as a performer and an individual.
“We’re not all from the same national background - I'm a Migrant from Bangladesh and there are people who are British Asian and others from the Middle East - so we all bring a variety of experiences and cultures onto the stage. We’ve not just been able to find common ground with being LGBTQ+ but we’ve also seen we have some common aspects with our experiences of being Brown.”
The Bitten Peach was co-founded by performers ShayShay, Lilly Snatchdragon and Evelyn Carnate. Since 2019, the group has performed at countless events and festivals across the country and given a platform to more than 100 artists.
