The resolution also directs the district to implement measures to prevent hate and threats and create a working group
The Chula Vista Elementary School District board of directors voted 4-1 Wednesday in favor of a resolution to fly the rainbow Pride flag at district headquarters on Harvey Milk Day and during the months of June and October.
The decision is a reversal of last week’s vote that failed on a tie vote. With President Lucy Ugarte absent, the tally split down the middle. Clerk Cesar Fernandez and Trustee Kate Bishop were in support and Vice President Francisco Tamayo and Trustee Delia Dominguez Cervantes opposed.Ugarte said Wednesday she was ill, but that if she had been at last week’s meeting, “we wouldn’t be here today.”
“Our primary objective in this meeting is to bring forth a stronger item that provides comprehensive support and protection for our LGBTQIA+ youth in the Chula Vista School District,” he said. Cervantes, who cast the only vote in opposition, said she supported the resolution, but not displaying the Pride flag because it put the district at risk of lawsuits and fuels more divisiveness.
