Squandering frequencies imperils Americans’ security, 5G preparedness, and prosperity.
They key takeaways are that China has a significantly greater amount of the relevant frequencies allocated to 5G in the mid-band range and a significant spectrum pipeline offering some 1660 MHz for 5G. By contrast, the US has scant 378 MHz in mid-band spectrum and ZERO pipeline.
It is remarkable that the US has achieved such incredible wireless success to date given the limited access to frequencies. But to compete with China in the future, the US will need a more aggressive approach to making more mid-band spectrum available for exclusive licensed use. Licensed spectrum offers economic and security benefits necessary to build the world’s best wireless networks.
Not every element of China’s strategy has succeeded, but no one doubts the significance of Chinese tech. That the mobile video appsupplanted Google as the leading internet domain should have been the wakeup call. This is exhibit 1 of a successful spectrum strategy: the point is not to empower the mobile operators, but rather to enable mobile wireless networks the testbed for innovative applications and services.
