The Pale Blue Eye ending explained: Delving into that dark twist
After he's recovered from a bit of blood-letting during the ritual, Poe goes to visit Landor to tell him what he's discovered about Landor's daughter Mattie . We're told during the movie that she just ran away, but that's not the case.
Landor knew Fry was one of the three who had raped his daughter because she managed to take Fry's dog tag during the assault. After discovering the heart had been taken out of Fry's body, Landor attempted to steer the investigation down the ritual route by killing and mutilating the sheep and the cow.
Rather than turning Landor in though for the killings, Poe decides to burn the evidence and says goodbye to Landor. In the final scene of the movie, Landor heads to the cliff where Mattie died and lets her ribbon go, his quest for vengeance over.Even after this explanation, you might still be wondering about Landor's actions during the investigation. After all, it was Landor who revealed that Fry didn't actually kill himself and it was Landor who uncovered the note in Fry's hand.
