California Gov. Gavin Newsom wearing a custom hat and jacket embroidered by Leslie Myer, who spoke to SFGATE about her experience working with the governor's office.appeared in front of the news media to discuss his proposals for the new state budget on Monday, he was wearing one of the several custom garments that have become one of his hallmarks since he first took office approximately four years ago: a navy blue jacket with a white bear embroidered on the left breast.
Leslie Myers, who runs an embroidery service from her home in North Highlands, told SFGATE that the jacket Newsom wore Monday is a later version of the one she first customized for him in late 2019 as several large wildfires burned throughout California.
Newsom liked her work so much, Myers said, that his staff reached out to her again a few weeks later and asked if she could embroider the bear onto two more jackets: an olive green Madewell coat and the navy blue jacket Newsom wore on Monday . The placement of the bear, which she purchased a, differs on each jacket.
