as the baby of the House. No one would deny that 25 is a young age to become an MP. But it is hard not be frustrated at the questions about whether he is “too young”. Although 25 is young in the grand scheme of things, it’s also old enough to have spent almost a decade in the labour market, paying taxes and working.only changed this year, a 25-year-old today may have been married for almost a decade. They may have served in the Army for nine years or been a voter for seven years.

I suspect that those speculating about whether Mather is old enough have very little idea of what young people get up to and assume we’re usually doing something feckless . However, our society makes no distinction between a 20-year-old and a 50-year-old when it comes to paying tax. You do not get more or less of a vote depending on how old you are. You’re not more or less liable for a speeding ticket. We do not recognise gradations of adulthood – it’s either you are an adult, or you aren’t.

However, there seems to be a growing assumption that younger adults exist in some third category. We are not quite trusted with what we’re legally entitled to. A prime example of this is the recent push to make universities responsible for the well-being of their students; awhich cleared the 100,000 signatures threshold needed to be discussed in Parliament stated that “Parents expect their children to be safe at university”.

Well, yes. We all hope and expect those we care about will be safe in whatever environment they find themselves in, but people’s bosses are not in the habit of ringing their parents over issues at work. I’m very glad mine doesn’t, and I’m sure you are too.
