While the Shakespeare-inclined worry about what the Ides of March might bring, mathematicians and the number-obsessed happily make plans for 3.14-mile Pi Day runs on March 14.
A few years ago, with these thoughts on his mind, Paul Grinvalds, then 53, was scouring his hometown of West Des Moines, Iowa, in search of the perfect Pi Day course. As a high schooler back in Nebraska, Grinvalds had considered becoming a lawyer. Then he attended a “Career Day” talk by an actuary. Yes, Grinvalds likes math. And running. And he’s got the spreadsheets to prove it, having filled them with the distance, time, pace, heart rate, shoes, training partners, and animals seen on virtually all his runs.On that particular day in 2013, Grinvalds ventured around West Des Moines, looking for his pi run location. He tried various compass quadrants and both banks of the Raccoon River. Nothing seemed right.
