‘The Old Man’ duo, Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, might officially be Hollywood’s newest, oldest, and most delightful bromance.
Season 1, Jeff and I only met at the very end, and, because of the pandemic, for us, was after two years. So, this time, it's like putting on a comfortable old sweater. It’s just been wonderful.
Either before production or during, what types of conversations did you two have about this series and these men?There’s a long, long scene between Jeff and I, when we're driving across Morocco, and it took six days to shoot, and when you shoot a scene like that, it means you're simply sitting in a car with the other guy for six days. It was exactly like crossing the country on a road trip in college. It was the most wonderful way to start what has turned out to be a really amazing trip.
What was it like shooting that extended sequence? It seems like an actor’s dream, just getting to sit opposite another incredible actor and deliver 12 minutes of dialogue that features a little of everything, with these characters reminiscing, bonding, arguing, and even a little shooting![Showrunner] John [Steinberg] writes wonderful, long dialogue scenes. Not a lot of them, but, when they come, they're extremely important.
These are two guys who knew each other extremely well, 30 years ago, but had to be separated, basically pretend the other one did not even exist. Now we're thrust back together, under the most violent circumstances. One of us has even plotted to have the other assassinated! And there we are with full knowledge of that having happened, stuck in a car together, racing across the countryside. That's pretty great stuff.
