The Switch has now sold 103.54 million units since it was released in 2017, overtaking the Wii’s lifetime sales of 101.63 million units. The Switch has managed amazing sales despite massive parts and chip shortages.
This is important in a variety of ways. The first point is that the argument at the time against the Wii’s massive sales was that it was mainly sold to casual players and not real gamers. That was obviously some pretty dodgy face-saving propaganda for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, especially now that Switch has overtaken that and no-one is claiming it is somehow a casual console.
The second point is that the Switch was released in 2017, whereas the PlayStation 4 was released in 2013 and has. That means the Switch has nearly as many units in less time, it will very likely overtake the PlayStation 4 at some point soon as well. The third and final point is that the Switch has still managed these amazing sales despite massive parts and chip shortages. Shortages that have plagued the global supply chains for the tech industry over the past few years, impacting the availability for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
