Last week, a Greater Manchester gig venue was saved in a first-of-its-kind music scheme led by the ‘National Trust of music venues’.
It's one of the many issues facing the music industry at present, and this week, issues such as how to support and grow grassroots venues will be discussed and debated at Beyond The Music , a new global music conference and festival holding its inaugural event here in Manchester. Founded by producer, presenter and promoter Oli Wilson, alongside BTM Director Sarah Pearson, founder of Wasted Youth Music, and Chair of Governance Rose Marley, CEO of Co-Operatives UK, its founders say that from the start, Manchester was always the obvious home, as "the beating heart of the UK’s cultural enterprise and a city historically known for social change".
“And although there was a great period in the 90s with the Manchester City Music Network and other various events, it had all fallen away and we concluded that it was probably worse than ever and set out to do something about it." “As an extension it is incumbent on us to look at the ethical practices of the business, which need root and branch reform,” she says. “We need to change the very nature of how we live and breathe as an industry.
