The starting bid for these classic shoes? $80,000!
Starting today, you get your chance to purchase a piece of running history: A never-worn pair of Nike’s first-ever shoe is going up for auction.Nike’s swoosh may be world-renowned today, but in 1972, the company was just a small startup in Eugene, Oregon, looking to get off the ground. Their first task was to promote their initial product: the Moon Shoe.
Others were also run in, but only one—size 12.5—was never used for a single step. The history of how this happened is murky. The previous owner found them at an estate sale in pristine, unused condition before selling them to the current owner. No pair that exists today can match the quality these. Some may argue that they lack the history of other Moon Shoes, like a worn pair without laces and falling apart owned by Bruce Mortenson that wasto a collector in Malaysia, and that could hurt its value. That’s a fair point, but the original work and design of these shoes combined with the unique unused state make this a historical artifact—like the unspoiled quality of a coveted toy in its original packaging.
