The moderate middle is vanishing from Texas GOP politics | Opinion

Dallas County Council of Republican Women hosted a debate between county judge candidates Lauren Davis and Edwin Flores at Studio Movie Grill of I-75 in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. After the Tuesday primary elections, it’s worth noting that there is a frustrated segment of moderate voters who want effective policy, not a battle of memes.

The GOP primary results offer no indication that the grip of the most conservative portion of the party in Texas is waning. Primary winners used to temper their fiery rhetoric and move toward the middle for the general election. We can’t expect that anymore. GOP politics in Texas is geared to energize the most rabid party loyalists, not to build broad governing consensus across party lines.

This is dangerous for democracy, poorly serves constituents and is a recipe for petty virtue-signaling and ill-conceived red meat policies shaped by a few on behalf of a few.
