From a holy spring to a famous ice cream shop, Chatburn deserves more than being overlooked in favour of neighbouring Downham and Sawley
It only takes a minute or two to drive through Chatburn. But it could well be a memorable minute or two, and even more so if you stop for a look around.
Sure, Chatburn may not have the same fairytale-like appearance of those mentioned above - or the impressive historical landmarks such as Whalley Abbey, Clitheroe Castle and Sawley Abbey - but it offers a number of things other locations in the beautiful Lancashire valley do not.View gallery For starters, Hudsons Ice cream. A fun '50 pence piece' shaped shop that is likely to have queue snaking around the clock on a sunny day more often than not.
Oh, and then there's the 2000-year-old Roman Road alongside the village. And just outside of the village is a hidden 'fairy bridge' that's actually easy to find - if you know where to look. The village is on the cusp of The Forest of Bowland and at the foot of Pendle Hill and this circular trail also dips into the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, past Pixie Rocks and the Romanesque Christ Church and across to Downham. Chatburn, which is 400 metres above sea level, is an ideal spot to base your visits to the surrounding area and also catch a glimpse of the lush landscape that encases it.
