What happens when you hand an electric Mini to fashion designer Paul Smith and ask him to shine a spotlight on sustainability issues in automotive manufacturing? The answer is what you see in this article, called the Mini Strip.
A custom-made, one-off electric Mini not intended for mass production, the Strip acts as a showcase for demonstrating how car design and production could be more sustainable. Key themes include how less material can be used, how components can be attached in ways that make them removable and recyclable, and how the use of different materials can up the sustainability stakes.
Examples on the exterior include the exposed screws used to attach the unpainted and recycled black plastic trim, and how the galvanized steel panels are unpainted and retain grinding marks caused during the manufacturing process. Instead of being painted in the traditional way, the body is protected from corrosion by a thin film of transparent paint. This warts-and-all approach is described as “the perfect imperfection” by Paul Smith.
Elsewhere, the grille trim and aerodynamic wheel covers – intended to reduce drag and increase range – are made from recycled Perspex, saving weight and resources. The same material is used for the panoramic roof, through which the bare metal bodysheel can be seen.
