Marvel Studios has a sequel obsession right now, but the MCU slate has a bigger problem tied to focusing primarily on characters already known.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is focused on sequels more than ever before, but this obsession is not Marvel Studios' biggest problem with the Multiverse Saga slate. The release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania helped kick off Phase 5 of the MCU. The highly anticipated MCU sequel's box office and critical disappointment come on the heels of Marvel Studios struggling on a more regular basis to find the level of success that helped propel Phase 3.
The multiple MCU sequels on the horizon comes as Marvel Studios is in the midst of an unprecedented run of releasing sequels. Spider-Man: No Way Home's release in December 2021 began a string of Marvel Studios making seven straight sequels. The third film starring Tom Holland's Spider-Man was followed by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022.
Even Marvel’s “New” Phase 5 & 6 Franchises Are Familiar Now Marvel Studios has several "new" franchise starters planned for Phases 5 and 6, but even these upcoming movies are really sequels or reboots that focus on characters audiences know from the MCU or other Marvel franchises instead of bringing new characters to the forefront. Thunderbolts is a prime example of the problem.
Phase 5’s Movies Prove Marvel Learned The Wrong Lessons From 2021 The combination of Marvel's sequels, reboots, and "new" franchises with familiar characters in Phase 5 proves that Marvel Studios learned the wrong lessons from 2021. The year was jam-packed with MCU movies and shows after COVID-19 caused mass delays. This meant releasing Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home in the span of five months.
