A key moment in the game came just after Kelly scored the team’s second goal, and whipped off her shirt, spinning it around in the air in celebration. Her platinum blonde ponytail – held back by a pink elastic hairband with shades of David Beckham in his playing days – streamed behind her as she joyfully sprinted across the pitch, her ecstatic teammates behind her all the way.
Of course, the ponytail’s chief purpose is practical. Nothing, least of all flyaways, was going to get in the way of these girls’ game. But as we all know, the way we present ourselves is inextricably linked to the way we feel. A high pony means business. Its swingy-ness adds sass. And it makes bouncing around to the sounds of 80,000 football fans singing “Sweet Caroline” at Wembley that much more fun.
