In the face of the gritty revelations in the American HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, BBC Radio 2 has made the extraordinary decision not to air any more of Michael Jackson's music. Here's how it breaks down.

The Maker Of The Film: Director Dan Reed attends the 'Leaving Neverland' Premiere during the 2019 Sundance Film Festival at Egyptian Theatre on January 25, 2019 in Park City, Utah. With the possible exceptions of Elvis and Prince, there aren't many kings of popular music that have struck gold quite as often or as substantially as Michael Jackson.
Seemingly non-committal, that release, verging artfully on a non-denial denial. But read closely, and taken in context with what they have done, the BBC is saying that, in the face of such a harrowing documentary and its narratives of child abuse and coercion, however much tap-along-sing-along joy that"Rock With You" might bring to the London or Manchester drive-time, the gift of unfettered airplay is the one relevant benefit that the BBC can, still, deny Michael Jackson.
It is a form of cultural bet that the BBC is making here. And significantly, their statement explaining it is open-ended enough not to put a time frame on any programming decision they may or may not make in the future. It can always be that no other major radio broadcasters/streamers and-or satellite services will follow suit in this instance -- not that the huge state-sponsored BBC would care about that.
The BBC's cultural bet is not that no one will ever play Michael Jackson. Rather, the bet is that right now the history of the man will start to matter. The previously glossed-over narrative of his behavior, as told in, will be bolted to the music. Not least, as an act of a major international radio broadcaster, striking him from the playlist is punitive in the most exquisite way: To the extent that the BBC can have anything to do with it, Mr.
