Karma Automotive is moving to a new phase with a heavily revised version of the plug-in hybrid Revero with new sheet metal and all-new powertrain
Chances are you’ve never heard of Karma Automotive. It’s a California-based, Chinese-owned, low volume automaker born from the ashes of what was once Fisker Automotive. Since its inception in 2014, it has had a single product, a low-slung four-door coupe originally called the Fisker Karma and subsequently rebranded as the Karma Revero.
Karma Automotive representatives including CTO Bob Kruse turned up this week at the annual Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Mich. with a pre-production Revero GT. The slinky profile originally penned by Henrik Fisker remains on the new GT, but all of the sheetmetal is actually new.
Propulsion comes from a pair of 200-kW motors driving each of the rear wheels for a total output of 536-hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. In between the generator and rear motors sits a lithium ion battery pack running down the center tunnel. Like the original, A123 supplies the battery but the original lithium iron phosphate cells have been replaced with nickel manganese cobalt cells similar to those used in most EVs today. The energy capacity has been increased from the original 20-kWh to 28-kWh.
Heading out of the parking lot of the Grand Traverse Resort in stealth mode felt much like any other EV, totally silent. But the look was more akin to the aforementioned Corvette, peering out over that long hood from a low driving position. Visibility to the front and sides was good, but the slim rear window restricts rear visibility as it does on many contemporary cars.
