The Jets' brass continues to hype still-developing QB Sam Darnold as if he already is a star. But it might help him if they pumped the brakes a little.

Before spring practice began in April, new Jets coach Adam Gase repeatedly talked about how impressed he was with second-year quarterback Sam Darnold. Yet Gase also noted that he wanted to bring the young signalcaller along slowly.
Certainly Gase knows quarterbacks, having once served as offensive coordinator for the legendary Peyton Manning. But it’s fair to wonder if the Jets are putting too many expectations on young Darnold’s plate. Look, Darnold has plenty of potential, and showed more than enough down the stretch last season to make the Jets’ organization believe that someday he can be that elusive franchise quarterback.
Processing his reads and locating secondary targets again was a problem in the spring, although that is quite understandable. Most young QBs struggle in this area, and Darnold is no exception. Also, he is learning a new offensive system and must deal each day with the aggressive defensive schemes of veteran coordinator Gregg Williams, whose system is more of an attacking one than that of the previous regime.
