The hauntingly beautiful 'abandoned' village where cars are banned an hour from Manchester

With cobbled walkways, ancient bridges and eerie ruins, this hauntingly beautiful village is almost entirely frozen in time. And while visitors are free to roam the narrow lanes of Wycoller in Lancashire, cars are banned.

Wycoller, near Colne, was once a handloom weavers' village - but during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century was abandoned by its residents who moved out to the nearby textile-boom towns of Lancashire to ply their trade. Those residents were never to return - and over the years 35 buildings fell derelict and were ultimately lost.

The hall, which dates back to the 1600s, is believed to have been the inspiration for Charlotte Bronte's Fearndean Manor in her novel Jane Eyre. The Bronte sisters are said to have regularly walked the 10 miles here from Haworth in neighbouring Yorkshire where they grew up. Now, the historic building, which includes a five bedroom barn conversion home as well as the tearooms, is up for sale for £527,500 with estate agents Fardella and Bell. It offers a rare chance for someone to move into the tiny village of just 14 homes.

That includes the rather splendid and huge central fireplace in what would have been the main hall of the mansion. For it is believed that Wycoller Hall was the inspiration for Ferndean Manor, the woodland manor house of Mr Rochester in her classic work Jane Eyre. There are plenty of information boards all around the ruins to give you the full, fascinating history.

Designed by Peter Meacock with Katarina Novomestska and Architecture Central Workshop, Atom was constructed in cement and coated in a metal-based paint, with circular viewing spaces cut into the frame.
