'The Handmaid's Tale' finally starts making Gilead's most despicable villains pay in Season 3, Episode 11 'Liars.'

"Liars" gets off to a rocky start, but by the end we're fist-pumping the air assome good things happen in this bleak, despairing world. Some of these bastards get what they deserve, at long last.Three of the series' villains get what's coming to them in this episode. On a trip to Jezebels to get help from a bartender there, June is confronted by Commander Winslow. One thing leads to another and he takes her back to his room, where he asks her where Commander Lawrence is.

Thankfully, the Martha who finds her there, bloodied and beaten next to the corpse of one of Gilead's most powerful men, doesn't turn her in. She was one of the women that June saved from the colonies. I'm not sure that detail needed to be inserted here; a Martha acting bravely and helping out a Handmaid in distress would make enough sense even if she didn't know who June was.

This also means that the Winslow/Waterford power block is gone. This was the primary power block opposing Commander Lawrence, attempting to weaken his position to the point where they evenNow that Waterford is in custody in Canada and Winslow is dead and gone, where does that leave Lawrence and June? At the end of the episode, Lawrence goes up to June and hands her a gun, telling her that"They'll be coming for us." But will they be? Nobody knows that June killed Commander Winslow.

Elsewhere, we mostly follow Serena and Fred on their little road trip. They have some nice moments together, finally connecting on a deeper emotional level. They have their own car, and Fred let's Serena drive. They go stay with a family out in the middle of nowhere. These people are rural, cut from a very different cloth, but obviously true believers. It's just a very different world from the one the Waterfords are used to. After dinner, the family sings a sort of Gregorian chant.

I nodded in agreement when Beth said"I never should have vouched for you. This house was a hell of a lot safer before you got here." Whither June goes, destruction and mayhem follow. At least this time the bad guys paid the price.
