The North Yorkshire village of Sinnington may be less well known than its gourmet near neighbours at Harome and Helmsley but it’s definitely worth beating a path to its door.
Staff are some of the friendliest I've encountered and that’s saying something. General manager Helen feels like your new best friend from a minute in. ‘Fab’ moved to Canada to work in a French restaurant near Montreal and came to England in 1997. He originally worked at the Fox & Hounds in 2008 staying on for more than two years before leaving to open his own hotel/restaurant - The Forresters Arms in Teesdale.He left the business with his partners to pursue other opportunities including becoming a sous chef at The Hare at Scawton, under renowned chef Paul Jackson.
From the specials menu, I chose a starter of rich and seasonal pan-fried chicken and mushroom boudin, slices of a sprightly little ‘sausage’ of sorts with firm texture but full earthy flavour which was served with a butternut squash puree and nibbles of artichoke crisp. For my main course, they had me at ‘foie gras and beef dripping toast’, never mind that there was beef fillet as part of the plate too. This was a dish of ‘last meal ever’ legend, as French as it comes with gentle red wine jus and mousseline potatoes.In tough moments it’s easy to go back to the sublime flavours of the rare beef, luscious, buttery foie gras and melting dripping toast. What a combination and perfection in delivery.
