The Flash’s opening weekend box office projections are close to Black Adam numbers, which could spell trouble for DC’s multiverse epic.
The Flash’s opening weekend box office projections are close to Black Adam numbers, which is worrying for the upcoming DC movie. The Flash is one of DC’s biggest projects in years in terms of scale, as it sees not only Barry Allen but also other famous DC superheroes. In addition to Ezra Miller's Barry Allen, The Flash features Ben Affleck’s Batman, Michael Keaton’s Batman, Michael Shannon’s General Zod, and the debut of Sasha Calle’s Supergirl.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, Variety reports that The Flash is tracking for a $70 million domestic opening weekend, which would put it close to Black Adam’s $68 million opening. The Dwayne Johnson-led film promised the beginning of a new DC Universe but failed to get a sequel after finishing its theatrical run with a $393 million box office total. If The Flash opens around $70 million, it will have to have strong legs to avoid a Black Adam situation.
Why The Flash Is Still Doing Better Than Black Adam's Opening Reception The biggest difference between The Flash and Black Adam is that the former is so far premiering to much better reviews than the latter. The Flash was first screened at CinemaCon 2023, almost two months before the film’s release date. Likewise, several advanced The Flash screenings were held in the weeks leading up to the film’s premiere.
The Flash currently has a 69% score on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas Black Adam has a 38% score. The Flash’s mixed-to-positive reviews mean that DC’s multiverse epic may have stronger legs than Black Adam, which would help avoid a box office failure. That said, with a reported budget of at least $200 million, The Flash needs to make at least $450 million to break even. The Flash finishing its box office run with Black Adam numbers would be bad news for DC.
