'[We] are in the perspective of TheFlash. Everything is distorted in terms of lights and textures. We enter this ‘waterworld’ which is basically being in Barry’s POV. It was part of the design so if it looks a little weird to you that was intended.'
Warning: This article may contain SPOILERS for The Flash. The Flash director Andy Muschietti defends the film's much-criticized CGI. While the movie initially received overwhelming praise from those who attended its CinemaCon premiere, the reception has since been mixed, with critics unanimously pointing out how The Flash's visual effects look unfinished.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, in an interview with io9, Muschietti defends the look of The Flash. While discussing a scene at the beginning, where Barry Allen saves babies from a nursery on the brink of falling down, Muschietti explains that the odd visuals were actually intentional. Check out his full comments on the matter below:
The idea, of course, is...we are in the perspective of the Flash. Everything is distorted in terms of lights and textures. We enter this ‘waterworld’ which is basically being in Barry’s POV. It was part of the design so if it looks a little weird to you that was intended. The Flash's Poor CGI Continues an Unfortunate DCEU Trend As mentioned above, reviews for The Flash were overwhelmingly positive when it had its world premiere at CinemaCon.
Regardless of the intentions behind The Flash's CGI, it has been compared to the 2017 version of Justice League, whose CGI was thoroughly mocked upon release. The movie underwent extensive reshoots after director Zack Snyder left the project and was replaced by Joss Whedon.
Justice League ultimately flopped at the box office, and future DCEU crossover plans were mostly scrapped after its poor critical and commercial reception. An alternate cut, Zack Snyder's Justice League, was released in 2021 to better reception, though its visual effects were sometimes criticized, particularly with how Martian Manhunter looked. The Flash will effectively mark an end to the DCEU and usher in a new era for James Gunn's DCU.
