When comparing TheFlash and ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ it’s evident that one film represents the future of things, the other a tired and best forgotten past.
It’s quite a whiplash to sit with that aesthetically and narratively invigorating film for nearly two and a half hours and then immediately be plopped down into, with its garish VFX and quippy narrative patterns so exhaustingly familiar to anyone who’s seen even a small handful of these movies.is trying to differentiate itself, and those efforts do not go unappreciated. In its best stretches, the film has an invitingly offbeat energy, guided some by’s decidedly un-macho performance.
But then comes the fan service, in which DC tries, yet again, to whip up a sense of awe surrounding its product—to essentially pretend that legions of moviegoers have become deeply enamored of the mythos that the company has so perfunctorily tried to create in its benighted run of films. I know that DCU devotees are out there. But judging from box office returns and audience ratings, it would seem that there are far fewer of them than hoped.
