Morecambe Bay has long been known for its seafood. Where there isn't Potted Shrimp that's been trawled from the shore, the promenade joins together an array of fish and chip shops that could fry up your dinner.
We took a table inside the restaurant and scanned through the menu. There are mixed appetiser sharing boards priced at £10 for two and £18 for four. Its fish dishes are made up of freshly battered haddock, traditional fishcake, breaded fishcake, breaded wholetail scampi, salt 'n' pepper squid and even a fish bun.
Entering the shop for competitions isn't really Kevin's thing, but he says over the years they've had to change to survive. The latest change they implemented was a shift from being open seasonally to being open all year round. This year though, it isn't just the presence of chain restaurants having an impact on fish and chip shops. Chippies across the country find themselves facing a crisis following a global shortage in both oil and fish amid the Ukraine and Russia conflict. On top of that, the rising cost of living plants huge numbers on businesses energy bills, and it's something Kevin says is "pretty grim" for independent chippies.
The double hit on fish and chip shops is something Kevin fears will see a cut in independents. "“It hasn’t fully hit yet, some people will only do it when they’re forced to, I think we’ve got scary times ahead. The biggest cost purchasing wise is your cooking oil and your fish, they’ve taken the biggest increases, so straight away you’re on a slippery ladder.
