Mike Frank and his sons Mitch and Craig began practising taekwondo together 11 years ago. Mitch says it’s amazing to be able to share the sport with his dad and brother. Photo taken in Saskatoon on Tuesday, July 24, 2013. For much of his career, Frank worked with Rodney Kayter, who began at the paper as an inserter in 1983 while he was in high school. He was a paper boy for a few years before that. In the late 1980s, he became a journeyman press operator and is now the shift supervisor.
A print run is a sensory experience, and for Kayter, the sound of the press being taken up is one of his favourite sounds. One press operator is in charge of pressing the button that takes up the press — when it ramps up. On the other hand, the sound he least likes to hear is a web break — the paper breaks and stops rolling.Article content
Lloyd Mawson started working at the paper in 1996 and quickly became the head mechanic, in charge of ordering parts and making repairs to the press. His sons wanted to work there — “they thought,” he adds. He’s made many videos of the press running and booklet making, which he’ll be able to show them. He’s saved the clippings of the babies of the year pages from the years his children were born. “I’m so happy to be part of this and history,” he says, adding that every story they printed at the plant becomes part of history.
