Investigation: American 'billionaire' Henry Mauriss came close to buying Newcastle United and Sheffield United. But he was a fraudster under investigation by the FBI. Now, he is in prison for wire fraud.
Ashley, the British retail tycoon with an estimated net worth of $4.9billion , acquired Newcastle United in 2007 but grew exceptionally unpopular with the club’s fanbase due to his perceived failure to invest in the club’s facilities, infrastructure and squad.By 2019, Ashley wanted to cash out. The Saudi Public Investment Fund wished to purchase Newcastle but initially encountered obstacles due to allegations of piracy by the Saudi state against the Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports.
Mauriss received orders to stop marketing securities in Texas and California as far back as 2006 and 2008 after being found to have misled investors. Several of Mauriss’ employees turned on the businessman to the extent they supplied information to the FBI about their former boss, including one employee who provided evidence to the FBI that Mauriss had provided misleading financial figures to investors.
Mauriss’ story appeared convincing to some of those he approached. He said his background had been in forming a credit and debit management company called Credit America Corporation, which he claims to have sold in 2010.Mauriss appears to have used a website called Brand Yourself, which provides services including reputation management and overcoming negative Google result searches.
In August 2008, the California state and Corporations Commissioner launched a new suit against Mauriss. This time, they said they were “acting to protect the public from unlawful and fraudulent sales of securities”. Court papers say Mauriss did not challenge the findings of the California order by requesting an administration hearing, but that he still continued to offer and sell the unqualified securities to residents.
in May 2022, Mauriss said “ClearTV enjoys over 240 content partnerships with major networks, broadcasters, cable and digital content providers”. “H. Mauriss used funds obtained from more recent investors to make interest payments to earlier investors so that the earlier investors would not withdraw their investments.”
While in London, Mauriss told associates he stayed at the five-star May Fair hotel and he often suggested the hotel as a meeting place. After Mauriss left associates out of pocket and upon learning fromabout his criminality, multiple former associates said they now wondered whether he may have resided in a more humble abode before suggesting the May Fair as a meeting place to impress people.
