While Newcastle fans celebrate the potential end of billionaire owner Mike Ashley’s 13-year reign at the Premier League club, the long-suffering, deeply loyal supporters await the possible arrival of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman alongside the billionaire Reuben brothers.
the new document reveals the agreement between Ashley and frequent football financier Amanda Staveley to push a $380 million offer for Newcastle over the line.
The uneasy alliance between football fans and billionaires looks set to continue at Newcastle. Tomlinson warns, “We didn't choose Mike Ashley and we don't choose these owners now. As football fans we support the club, not the owners. It's really complex. People will find this difficult.” Newcastle United could soon sit alongside the recent Anthony Joshua fight at the Diriyah Arena in Riyadh, the Spanish Super Cup and a slot in the F1 calendar as the crown jewels in Saudi Arabia’s new found sporting soft power.
But there are plenty of critics. In January, Felix Jakens, Amnesty International UK’s Head of Campaigns, toldthat the takeover of Newcastle United didn’t come as a major surprise, warning that this bore the hallmarks of ‘sportswashing,’ an attempt “to use the glamour and prestige of top-tier sport as a public relations tool to distract from the country’s abysmal human rights record,” and help in the “blatant whitewash over Jamal Khashoggi’s grisly murder.
Maguire adds that the rule came in because today’s so-called big clubs–Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea–”were scared witless when Leicester won the Premier League in 2016 and since then have changed the distribution rules to prevent the smaller clubs getting too much money.” Maguire describes Newcastle’s ability to spend under the new ownership as higher than in years past while under Ashley, “but not jaw-droppingly so.
Born in Mumbai and raised in the U.K., the Reuben brothers don’t live in the U.K., but their own website clearly details businesses, investments and political arguments that point to a deep relationship with the country. At the height of a career that started with carpets and Soviet metal, the brothers today own some of London’s most prestigious postcodes, making up a large part of their fortune.
