A study published in BMCEndocrDisord finds that a low carbohydrate diet may increase serum levels of testosterone and improve erectile function in hypogonadal men with metabolic syndrome. The authors call for larger studies to prove this association.

]. All measurements were performed by the same investigator. All laboratory tests were performed at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. Participants with total serum testosterone < 300 ng/dL and/or calculated free testosterone levels < 6.5 ng/dL, after two consecutive measures, were considered hypogonadal [The control group was instructed to continue eating normally but received guidance about healthy eating patterns.

Data analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics . Descriptive statistics were used. Normal distribution of the data was evaluated with Shapiro Wilks test. Student’s t test and Mann–Whitney U tests were used for normally distributed and non-normally distributed quantitative variables, respectively. In the comparison of qualitative data, Chi-Square and McNemar tests were used, respectively for dependent and independent samples.

The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre . This study was carried out in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and Brazilian regulatory guidelines and norms for research involving human beings . This study was registered at Plataforma Brasil and clinicaltrials.gov .A total of 22 men were included, 4 of whom dropped out after the first visit, 1 of the control group and 3 of the low carbohydrate one, due to personal problems.

The groups were homogeneous regarding the most relevant demographic data . The mean age was 59.8 and 57 years in the control and low-carbohydrate groups, respectively . The prevalence of both hypertension and diabetes was 57% in the sample, with no significant difference between the groups . A total of 19% of the participants were smokers, with no significant difference between the groups . Regarding ethnicity, 71% self-reported as Caucasian, with no significant difference between the groups .

Acute phase characteristics and long-term complications of pulmonary embolism in COVID-19 compared to non-COVID-19 cohort: a large single-centre study - BMC Pulmonary MedicineAcute phase characteristics and long-term complications of pulmonary embolism in COVID-19 compared to non-COVID-19 cohort: a large single-centre study - BMC Pulmonary MedicineBackground To compare the severity of pulmonary embolism (PE) and the long-term complications between patients with and without COVID-19, and to investigate whether the tools for risk stratification of death are valid in this population. Methods We retrospectively included hospitalized patients with PE from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2022. Comparisons for acute episode characteristics, risk stratification of the PE, outcomes, and long-term complications were made between COVID and non-COVID patients. Results We analyzed 116 (27.5%) COVID patients and 305 (72.4%) non-COVID patients. In patients with COVID-19, the traditional risk factors for PE were absent, and the incidence of deep vein thrombosis was lower. COVID patients showed significantly higher lymphocyte count, lactate dehydrogenase, lactic acid, and D-dimer levels. COVID patients had PE of smaller size (12.3% vs. 25.5% main pulmonary artery, 29.8% vs. 37.1% lobar, 44.7% vs. 29.5% segmental and 13.2% vs. 7.9% subsegmental, respectively; p | 0.001), less right ventricular dysfunction (7.7% vs. 17.7%; p = 0.007) and higher sPESI score (1.66 vs. 1.11; p | 0.001). The need for mechanical ventilation was significantly higher in COVID patients (8.6% vs. 1.3%; p | 0.001); However, the in-hospital death was less (5.2% vs. 10.8%; p = 0.074). The incidence of long-term complications was lower in COVID cohort (p | 0.001). PE severity assessed by high sPESI and intermediate and high-risk categories were independently associated with in-hospital mortality in COVID patients. Conclusion The risk of in-hospital mortality and the incidence of long-term complications were lower in COVID-19. The usual tools for risk stratification of PE are valid in COVID patients.

Intimate partner violence and associated factors among HIV positive women attending antiretroviral therapy clinics in Gondar city, Northwest Ethiopia - BMC Women's HealthIntimate partner violence and associated factors among HIV positive women attending antiretroviral therapy clinics in Gondar city, Northwest Ethiopia - BMC Women's HealthIntroduction Intimate partner violence against women is a behavior within an intimate relationship that causes sexual, physical, or psychological harm to the women. It occurs among all socioeconomic, religious, and cultural groups in all settings, and affects the health of women, families, and the community at large. Determining the magnitude and determinants of intimate partner violence against HIV positive women could help to design preventive and control strategies. However, there is a dearth of information regarding the magnitude and determinants of intimate partner violence against HIV positive women in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of intimate partner violence against HIV positive women in Gondar city, Northwest Ethiopia. Method A facility-based cross-sectional study was carried out from February to May 2021 in selected public health facilities of Gondar city among 626 HIV positive women. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select study participants. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) version 20 software. Bivariable and Multivariable logistic regression models were done. Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to identify determinants of intimate partner violence. Statistical significance was considered at a p value | 0.05. Results The overall prevalence of intimate partner violence against HIV positive women within the last 12 months was 64.2% (95% CI 60.4, 68.2). Physical violence was the most common type (54.8%), followed by sexual (51.1%) and emotional (48.9%) violence. Intimate partner violence among HIV positive women was associated with women’s age 19–24 (AOR = 0.13, 95% CI 0.02, 0.79), monthly income of 500–2500 (AOR = 6.5, 95% CI 1.72, 25.0), urban residence (AOR = 0.35, 95% CI 0.13, 0.91), partner drink alcohol (AOR = 2.14, 95% CI 1.42, 4.06), and a husband with no multiple sexual partners (AOR = 0.75, 95% CI 0.34, 0.94).
