Wikipedia has struggled with its own gender imbalance problems.
One of the reasons for the imbalance, she says, is that among the site’s unpaid contributors, men outnumber women roughly nine-to-one. There are efforts underway to change this. One is called “Women In Red,” a reference to the fact that on Wikipedia, if you link to another article, the link is blue, but if you link to an article that doesn’t exist, it’s in red.
At the same time, women make up a majority of senior leadership at the Wikimedia Foundation itself—including the CEO, the COO, the chief advancement officer, chief creative officer, vice president of HR and chief engagement officer.
