In the last decade of college football, just about everything has changed. Players can be paid and move teams like free agents. Conference allegiances are all scrambled. Cable TV is king. The only constant is that it's all still about the money.
In 2011, Alabama entered the season ranked No. 2 and a few months later won college football’s national title game. In 2021, Alabama is a few months removedand is ranked No. 1 in preseason polls for the 2021 season that is about to begin.
So not much has changed in college football, right? Not quite. In fact, things have changed so much, especially in the last two years, that the sport in many ways bears little resemblance to the one on display just a few years ago. Players can earn money and transfer freely from program to program. The TV money that seemed enormous back then has grown to be absolutely gigantic. And another massive conference realignment is under way that will likely completely rearrange the last round of conference musical chairs, which was just revving up about 10 years ago.
“This last year has been monumental in college athletics,” said Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren in an interview. “There’s a lot of uncertainty right now.” So when Nebraska kicks off the 2021 season at Illinois on Saturday, 11 players will still line up on either side of the ball aiming to score or stop touchdowns. But just about everything else around will be different.
