.EmeraldFennell spoke about Camilla and Charles's love story, whether Camilla is due for a feminist re-examination, and the upside of The Crown fans' incessant Google fact-checking.
incessant Google fact-checkingWhen your casting was announced, you said that you were both “over the moon” and “terrified” to be joining. Can you tell me more about that mix of feelings, and what was the source of your terror?
Minor detail, but you also mentioned Camilla’s “pudding-bowl haircut.” Is that your real hair on the show? Or a wig? It’s interesting because those of us who are playing this set of kids, and the kids’ friends, we were probably too young to be aware of this stuff. I knew about it loosely. From what I have heard, she is an incredibly funny, warm, nice person, and I’m interested in anyone whose story that’s been told by the world, and by the media, is maybe at odds with who they really are. It seemed like a situation that was dreadful for everyone involved, and I think that she probably got a lot of the heat.
Of course, the only thing that’s possible to talk about is our portrayal, because we really don’t know. But I think that for us, what seems to be the case is that their relationship was very much rooted in a friendship. I think it’s a very romantic thing to be deeply, deeply close friends. When we approach it, they make each other laugh all the time. They’re both very silly. They both live—Charles, certainly—a life that doesn’t let him be silly. It’s a lonely life.
