Christopher Eubanks only recently reached tennis' top 100. But doing so freed up his mind and unlocked a torrid stretch for the 6-foot-7 Atlanta native. Now, he's taking Wimbledon by storm. CDEccleshare on one of the tournament's feel-good stories.
Eubanks spent three years at Georgia Tech between 2014 and 2017, going pro after his third year. He initially studied industrial engineering. “Then I realised I wasn’t nearly that smart and I switched to business,” he said on Saturday. He enjoyed a standout career at Georgia Tech, where he twice earned All-American status, and each summer while there he was given wildcards to compete at the professional-level Atlanta Open, one of the hard-court events leading up to the US Open.
Eubanks left Georgia Tech in 2017 and the positive impression he made there has followed him onto the professional circuit. Many players cite him as one of their favourites to be around, and the up-and-coming American Ben Shelton described him toTalking to a small group of reporters last week about his reputation as the nicest man in tennis, Eubanks said: “I’m not this person who’s obsessed with winning at all costs. Of course I want to win, but I have to have joy, I have to have fun.
Eubanks realised something needed to change. He brought in former Georgia Tech team-mate Phillip Gresk as a full-time coach, then hired Ruan Roelofse in 2021. Eubanks resolved to be more professional and give tennis a proper go. He said last week that he had realised he needed to be “more diligent” when it came to things like looking after his body and warming up properly.
On the court, Eubanks finished last year strongly. He qualified for the US Open and reached the second round, then made the final of a couple of Challenger events to finish the year ranked 123. He carried that momentum into 2023, making the Australian Open second round. That put him in reach of the world’s top 100, the holy grail for emerging tennis players, partly as it means automatic entry for majors.
