The CDC is investigating a link between e-cigarettes and lung illness
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working alongside five states’ health departments to probe “a cluster of pulmonary illnesses” associated with e-cigarette use, the agency said over the weekend.
Just two days earlier, the Associated Press had reported that up to 50 people in six states, many of whom were teens, had reported lung illnesses possibly related to e-cigarettes and other vaping devices. Doctors believe the common thread among these cases may be vaping, the AP reported. Some cases reportedly may have involved THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.
While just around 1.5% of high-school students used e-cigarettes in 2011, 20.8% did in 2018, the CDC has found; e-cigarette use rose from 0.6% to 4.9% among middle schoolers during the same time frame. Meanwhile, use among high schoolers increased by 78% between 2017 and 2018, and increased by 48% among middle schoolers.
Juul, which controls around 75% of the U.S. e-cigarette market, has been accused of targeting teens. While co-founder James Monsees conceded during a House Oversight committee hearing last month that the company had made “missteps,” he maintained that it “never wanted any non-nicotine user, and certainly nobody under age, to ever use Juul products.”
