The Browns secondary has been doing its part to help the defense get off to a great start this season.

They’re excelling in man, too. Safety Rodney McLeod and cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. have allowed a team-low 39.6 passer rating when targeted in man. Delpit is at 42.4, Ward at 51.6 and Newsome at 56.3 through three games.

It’s a stark turnaround from this time a year ago, when the secondary was licking its wounds from blown coverages against the Panthers and, most memorably, in an historic loss to the Jets. So far, the only real criticism of the secondary is the 71-yard touchdown they allowed to Steelers wide receiver George Pickens on Monday Night Football -- “The big play we’ve given up the whole year was probably a result of guys that were trying to jump a play, feeling that they needed to make a play instead of letting the defense work,” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said, “we’re just going to let the defense work.” -- and a lack of turnovers.

Even without forcing turnovers, the Browns defense has been on the field for the second-fewest plays in the league with 152, nine behind the Bills, how have forced a league-high nine turnovers.
