The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty and Sex and the City are the stuff of cultural legend, but how much of it is real?Famed for her work ethic and treadmill desk, Joanna made a name for herself as a reporter on Fleet Street, once the publishing centre of London. In 1997 she moved to New York, where she grew her career at media giant Hearst, becoming editor-in-chief of Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan.
One particular episode comes to Joanna’s mind: Carry the Weight. The episode sees Mia an activist and sexual assault survivor create a piece of performance art, holding the scales of Lady Justice, in protest of her abuser being acquitted. Throughout the episode, other sexual assault survivors take turns holding the scales, as a sign of solidarity.
“The couple that he was going to play with said: ‘Yes, we have a shotgun, but it's in a locked box and it's in a high closet that they won't be able to reach.’ And I couldn't believe these people had a shotgun. I mean, there's no English equivalent.”What The Bold Type does well, Joanna explains, is presenting real women and the problems they face.
