Stephen Smith's death was ruled a hit-and-run. His body was found 15 miles from the estate of former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who was found guilty this month of killing his wife and son.
A spokesperson said at the time that the agency would look into Smith's death"based upon information gathered during the course of the double murder investigation of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.
"that he was killed in a hit-and-run, suggesting that his injuries weren't consistent with a hit-and-run and that there was no debris along the rural road where his body was found, about 15 miles from the Murdaugh estate.
