“Fat girls have been hidden from the fashion world so I wanted to make sure I was seen. It’ll be a reminder for the little girls who think there isn’t anyone who looks like them in the fashion world.”
Many of the women I talked to work in the fashion industry and have frequently been the only big girl in the room. We’ve experienced the microaggressions, “Are you sure that’s your seat?”. We’ve been overlooked for street style photos. All of these things can make you feel inferior, but the incredible women in this gallery are living proof that: we are stylish, we are photogenic, we speak our minds and we are here.
I remember on the day of the Tadashi Shoji show, I opted out of getting out of my Uber directly in front of the venue and instead decided to walk down the street into the sea of street style photographers. I felt their hesitation when I walked past, cameras dropped and they all clamoured to shoot the next attendee who of course didn’t look anything like me. One of the photographers even grabbed my arm as I was walking through and said “Great look sis!”.
Good thing I took matters into my own hands. I talked with twelve women not just about being plus size at fashion week, but also their style . And, with the help of photographer and fellow curvy girl
