To pull off truly great tomato toast, you really only need one tool: a fantastic serrated knife.
Having tested many, many serrated knives a few years ago, I thought I was living with my perfect knife. Then aof mine told me that the only bread knife that could stand up to his considerable bread slicing demands was this Victorinox serrated chef’s knife.
A serrated chef’s knife is pretty much what it sounds like: a knife that has a standard triangular chef’s knife shape rather than the long, rectangular profile of a bread knife. Like a bread knife, though, the blade is serrated. “When we’re slicing a lot of sandwich loaves, this knife allows us to work more quickly than a standard bread knife,” my baker friend, Adam, says. The softly sloping handle builds in some space between your grip and the blade, like a standard chef’s knife.
Plus, the thicker, taller blade is just sturdier—even some of the best serrated knives get wobbly and can start to feel too thin when your hand gets tired from slicing multiple full loaves. The bolstered handle is more comfortable to grip, as well. “When the bakery workers and I are slicing bread, we all fight over this knife,” Adam says.
I’m not a pro who slices hundreds of loaves a day, but this knife makes it so easy to slice bread for toast that I find myself reaching for it more than my standard serrated knife. And it’s more versatile, because it
