James Ayo moved to Belfast from East London five years ago and set up Hotbox Entertainment to support the hip hop scene here

A music studio in East Belfast is hosting a two-day event this month to promote and support Northern Ireland's vibrant hip-hop and rap scene.

Speaking to Belfast Live, James said: "I knew the hip-hop scene was growing here and we were building a community, but it felt like it was being overlooked. I have heard people saying there isn't a hip-hop or rap community here, which is what pushed me to say 'You know what, enough is enough, let's put together a mixtape to show rap is big here.

"My whole thing is to get more people signed up and involved, we're getting to the stage where we can motivate more young people and give them something to look up to." "In the UK, they have the likes of Dave that kids can look up to, but here there's a few but you really have to look for them. It's not advertised everywhere.

"Trance is what the kids are banging in their houses, I live in a student area and it's all you hear. It's not something I ever listen to. James said it can be "demotivating" for hip-hop artists here to not feature as widely on music event line-ups compared to other genres. As for what he hopes for the future, he said they have a lot coming up and hope the mixtape events help spark a change in the music industry in Northern Ireland.
