The 2019 class (made up of 842 members) is 50% women and 29% people of color
As paltry as the number of women and people of color remains, it’s worth remembering where we started: In 2015, the same year’s #OscarsSoWhite hashtag took off, the Academy’s makeup was just 25% women and 8% people of color. Within that context it’s heartening to see that the organization has made some progress in actually fixing the problem, gradual as the change may be.
This year’s class also includes six invitees who received invitations from multiple branches—including newly minted Oscar winner Lady Gaga, who received invitations from both the Actors and Music branches.
