On the surface, this is a dream partnership through two of Japan’s most loved brands. The result of this collaboration is the Sundiro Honda x Muji MS01 electric moped. We took it for a spin. These are our thoughts.
Cruising down wide side streets on the MS01 was easy and effortless. I was always one of the first to accelerate away from lights, using one of the only two buttons to blast the weedy horn . Still, the poor power came back to haunt me, as although I passed some of the stragglers with boxes piled high on their bikes, they soon caught up and overtook me on their de-restricted, lead-acid, generic mopeds.
But in pursuit of aesthetic purity, it’s the practical aspects that let this moped down. There is nowhere to store your helmet. The hook for your shopping in the footwell is too low, meaning your bag of vegetables flops around your ankles. White looks great in the photos, but will end up grubby very quickly in Shanghai . There’s no leg protection from the rain or wind thanks to that sleek, thin stem at the front. Lastly, there’s no storage for your lock, either.
