Teams looking to climb out of the depths of their division, or push for a Stanley Cup, have made this summer's most risky moves.
An NHL team trying to move to the next level can get squeezed in free agency. The top free agents choose the strongest contenders. The second-tier free agents wait in line and extract more money from pretenders and also-rans.
The signing by the Red Wings of J.T. Compher is a reasonable match. The deal is too much by 20 percent and too long by a year or two, but for the organization the added risk on the deal is justifiable. Contracts like Compher’s can pay off. If he lands on a line that can outscore at five-on-five and slide in and help on special teams, Detroit will be paid in full.
The Atlantic Division is loaded. The Red Wings are trying to climb from an 80-point campaign to the mid-90s in the season to come. If that happens, more attractive free agents might come available for the team. At that point, Compher’s deal will become an albatross, and offloading it might be expensive. That’s a risky bet, but Detroit signed a good player.
