The United States is often referred to as an ethnic “melting pot” due to its diverse cultures and history of immigrants, but there are some regional differences when it comes to surnames.
Michigan, meanwhile, features Smith, Johnson and Williams as the most popular surnames amongst the state’s population. Pennsylvania is similar to Ohio and Michigan, with Smith, Miller and Williams at the top. California and New Mexico – with larger Latino populations than most states – didn’t have any of the six most common last names across the U.S. The most common surnames in California were Garcia, Hernandez and Lopez, while the most common surnames in New Mexico were Martinez, Garcia and Chavez.
