Rag pudding dates back to the 1800s in Lancashire - and for just £2.80, we had to try one
from Holly Tree, which was my first experience in the rag pudding world. I was extremely impressed with its vegetarian counterpart, but I've never tried the original, the minced meat version and the rag pudding of all rag puddings. So, on a Wednesday afternoon, at around lunchtime, I took myself to Holly Tree to try one out. This particular chippy sources their puddings from Jacksons of Milnrow who have produced the foodstuff for generations.
The pudding itself is not unlike a steak and kidney pudding, but there's no offal in sight here. The finest quality beef is wrapped in suet pastry and steamed, to create a soft and meaty dish. We purchased one of these for the low price of £2.80 and it was made by the lovely staff a lot quicker than you may expect for something sold where fish and chips are more the norm. Asked if I want salt and vinegar on my historical lunch, I say yes with no hesitation - it might not be traditional, but surely this can only make it taste better?
Once it's ready, I am eager to taste and immediately unwrap my new taste adventure. The exterior looks almost identical to its cheese and onion sister, so I'm comforted knowing this will probably taste just as good.Cutting it in half, it's clear that there's no stingy portions here - plenty of minced meat is packed into its pastry shell and it's far from dry too, with lots of gravy involved too.
It would be ideal with a portion of chips and slathered with more chip shop gravy, but honestly for a light meal or snack, on its own is just as satisfying. It's a proud tradition of us Lancastrians and one to be celebrated, I just wish more chip shops and places around the county followed in Holly Tree's footsteps of championing what Lancashire has to offer.
