New figures have revealed the areas of Nottinghamshire with the highest proportion of people who say they have no religion. The 2021 Census has shown there are now more people in the county who don't believe in any God than there are Christians.
When the 2011 Census was taken, 56.5% of Nottinghamshire's population said that they were Christian. But now that figure has dropped to just 43%. Instead, 43.8% said that they were not religious in any way, up from a figure of 30.9% a decade ago. The figures show that the Kirkby Central area of Ashfield is the part of Nottinghamshire with the highest percentage of people reporting having no religion at all.Meanwhile, the Worksop Town and South area of Bassetlaw is the part of Nottinghamshire with the highest proportion of people still identifying as Christian. Reacting earlier this week to the trend of declining Christianity, The Archbishop of York, The Most Reverend Stephen Cottrell, said: “We have left behind the era when many people almost automatically identified as Christian but other surveys consistently show how the same people still seek spiritual truth and wisdom and a set of values to live by.
“This winter – perhaps more so than for a long time – people right across the country, some in desperate need, will be turning to their local church, not only for spiritual hope but practical help.
