Sens. Cruz and Cornyn want to rename a Plano VA clinic for long-time Texas representative and war hero Sam Johnson.
“With more than five decades of service to our nation in the Air Force and Congress, Sam’s life was a shining example of American patriotism,” Cornyn said. “I ask all my colleagues in Congress to join me in paying tribute to his extraordinary legacy.”
The senators, both Republicans, announced legislation Thursday to name the facility for Johnson, who died at age 89 in 2020, the year after he retired from Congress. After graduation, he attended flight school at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. He arrived in Korea in late 1952 and flew 62 missions in the Korean War in an F-86 Sabre named Shirley’s Texas Tornado, after his wife.
“Sam Johnson was a legendary figure,” Cruz said. “Colonel Johnson courageously served our nation with honor and prestige and … served the Texans of the 3rd Congressional District with the same resolve and distinction.”
