AAUSTIN — The Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs on Monday debated a bill to restrict competition by transgender athletes in collegiate sports, the first hearing this session involving legislation that affects the LGBTQ community.by Mayes Middleton, R-Galveston, would require all collegiate athletes to compete according to their sex at birth regardless of their gender identity.

Debate on the bill didn’t start until after 7:00 p.m. The committee, which has a Republican majority, did not vote on the bill Monday but can take it up during any future meeting. If the bill passes committee, it’s next stop will be debate by the full Senate.Despite the late hour, more than two dozen people turned out to speak on the bill. The majority spoke in favor of the legislation.

The bill is one of Lt. Gov Dan Patrick’s priorities this session, and already has 17 of 31 senators signed on as coauthors., one of the few bills involving LGBTQ rights that he has publicly thrown his support behind. Texas lawmakers passed similar legislation restricting transgender athletic competition in high school sports last session. Several other states are also debating transgender high school or collegiate athlete restrictions this year, and
