Texas Republican congressman Matt Schaefer railed against Americans calling for lawmakers to"do something" about mass shootings, arguing via Twitter Saturday that God and prayer are more effective than gun control regulations.
"'Do something!' is the statement we keep hearing. As an elected official with a vote in Austin, let me tell you what I am NOT going to do," Schaefer, who was first elected in 2012, tweeted Saturday evening. The GOP congressman outright rejected any bans on AR-15s, high capacity magazines and said"NO to universal background checks." Instead, Schaefer said prayer, faith in God and single mothers carrying handguns may help prevent future mass shootings across the country. Gun control advocates and the families of victims in past mass shootings commonly deride lawmakers offering"thoughts and prayers" in lieu of tangible legislation.
"YES to supporting our public schools. YES to giving every law-abiding single mom the right to carry a handgun to protect her and her kids without permission from the state, and the same for all other law-abiding Texans of age," Schaefer continued.
